James Brost

James is a general partner of Intelligent Investment Management, LLP.
In 2012, James became a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional (CFP®) which required meeting the rigorous academic and ethical requirements of the CFP® exam. As a CFP® professional, he has completed studies in the financial planning process, risk management, investments, tax planning and management, retirement and employee benefits as well as estate planning. James furthered his credentials by earning the Accredited Portfolio Management Advisor SM (APMA®) designation in 2014 and the Accredited Wealth Management Advisor SM (AWMA®) in 2018. To earn these designations James completed extensive course work encompassing client assessment and sustainability, risk versus return analysis and modern portfolio theory, wealth strategies, equity-based compensation plans, asset protection alternatives and retirement planning. James has also held a Series 65 Investment Adviser license since 2008.
James received his bachelor's degree from the University of Oregon in 1997 majoring in psychology. In 2001 he completed his master's degree in education with a focus in marriage and family therapy from the University of Oregon.
James is a Durango High-Noon Rotary member and works with the annual scholarship committee. He has previously served as Rotary Treasurer, Board-Member-At-Large and Foundation Chair. He is a past member and former President of the Durango Earlybirds Toastmasters International club. He is also a graduate of the 2017 Leadership La Plata Class.
He contributes to the Friends of Durango Public Library, La Plata Open Space Conservancy and the Boys and Girls Club of La Plata County as well as the La Plata County Humane Society. He is a lifetime member of the following organizations: APO; a National Collegiate Service Organization, University of Oregon Alumni Association and PSI CHI; a National Honors Society for Psychology students.
When James is not in the office he likes getting outdoors to exercise and enjoys hiking, snowshoeing, biking and an occasional round of golf. He lives in Durango with his wife, Stephenie, their two children Kyla and Keagan and their dogs, Roxy and Oreo.
